African American and Diaspora Studies Collection

Indiana University Press has been at the forefront of publishing on the history, literature, and arts of the African diaspora. Our widely-praised, interdisciplinary series, Blacks in the Diaspora, founded by Darlene Clark Hine, John McCluskey, Jr., and David Barry Gaspar, marks its 25th anniversary in 2009. Our books and journals have been instrumental in recovering the stories of black women in America; neglected writers, artists, and filmmakers; reformers and revolutionaries; Brazilian slaves, Mexican freedmen, Bostonian elites—the rich variety of the black experience in the Americas. These titles have opened up new areas of research, found lasting homes in the college classroom, and helped introduce a new generation of scholars of the Black Atlantic and the global African diaspora. And they have been honored with awards from the American Historical Association, the Association of Black Women Historians, the National Conference of Black Political Scientists, the Academy of Criminal Justice, the Gustavus Myers Center, and the Children’s Literature Association, and named a Choice Outstanding Academic Book.
